Presenters

Professor Paul M Thompson, Chair in Zoology, School of Biological Sciences, University of Aberdeen

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/ibes/staff/lighthouse

Paul Thompson’s research is investigating how marine wildlife is influenced by environmental change. His work has focused on populations of seals, dolphins and seabirds in Scottish waters, and he has recently become particularly interested in the impacts of anthropogenic noise on marine mammals.

Mark Lyken – Visual artist and composer

Mark Lyken is a visual artist and musician based in Glasgow Scotland. Working across diverse disciplines, he creates paintings, sculpture, installations and sound works and strives to maintain a balance between the natural and the digital world. Of particular interest is the interplay between nature, culture and technology, revealing the musicality of the environment and the ways in which digital existence may be reconciled with the soul inherent in analogue mediums. Mark collaborates with other artists and specialists from different research fields. Recent results are featured on EP “The Terrestrial Sea”.

Past collaborations:

In summer 2012, IOTA (Inverness Old Town Art), in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen’s School of Biological Sciences curated and managed a bio-acoustic residency of two visual artists in The Lighthouse Field Station, Cromarty.

The artists, Stephen Hurrel & Mark Lyken explored how sound and light within the physical spaces we inhabit [natural and man-made  affects behaviour patterns. The artists have gained insight into the processes of the marine biologists and their current research findings, whilst also accompanying them on field trips to diverse and challenging locations.

Professor Paul Thompson, Director of the Lighthouse Field Station, explained: “We are always seeking new ways to increase awareness of the marine environment and disseminate our findings. This collaboration with IOTA is an exciting opportunity for us to hear other perspectives on our work, and to explore how art might help us reach a wide audience.”
